I couldn't resist posting these vintage Irish lads St. Patrick's Day cards, which were designed to greet people for the iconic holiday most people celebrate in March, whether they're Irish or not. Apparently it used to be quite popular to send St. Patrick's Day greeting cards, much more so than it is today. That's why there's a great selection of vintage cards available in digital form.

Unless you're Irish, you might be wondering what "lad" means. Some define a lad as a young man, never a boy. But others stretch the term to cover boys and men. Some definitions even use the term to mean companion, comrade or mate. No matter the age or exact definition, though, the term lad comes from "ladde," which is of Celtic origin. For this reason the term is often associated with Irish males.

Some of the lads on these free St.Patrick's Day greeting cards are regular boys, goofing around (with pigs, of all things) and generally being merry for St. Patrick's Day. Others are more serious, even though one of them is dancing. Many of them are dressed in ways we would probably consider strange today. But the style of dress for each is indicative of the time from which these came. These vintage Saint Patrick's Day cards aren't dated, but one comes from the Colonial era, or at least was designed to depict a Colonial lad.
