Fall is my favorite time of the year and Thanksgiving is my favorite fall event. In addition to enjoying the fun of Thanksgiving dinner, I love that I finally stop sweltering because the weather cools off here in South Florida. By the end of November we can actually open our windows. It's like heaven on earth.

This free Thanksgiving clip art captures the feeling of fall that I love so much, so I was excited when Picnic.com finally released their Thanksgiving art. For those who haven't seen my other free clip art hubs, I use Picnik to make my own clip art. You can also use it to superimpose Thanksgiving images over your photos. You might want to try it; it's free!

What I'm Thankful for This Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving 2008: This Thanksgiving I have something else to look forward to besides pumpkin pie and turkey, because our niece Amy will be marching in the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade with the South Florida Special Needs Color Guard (FSNCG). Because of the name, the FSNCG seems like it would be just a Florida organization, but it's actually the only special needs color guard in the country.

Amy, who is also an accomplished Special Olympics athlete, and a group of other talented developmentally disabled South Floridians, have been working very hard to get themselves ready for the big event on Thanksgiving weekend. They also marched in the parade two years ago, but they were only seen very briefly on TV. This year NBC has chosen The Special Needs Color Guard as one of 12 groups out of 250 to focus on in their narration for the Thanksgiving Day parade.

Here's a video of their 2008 performance:

The color guard is always looking for funds, so if you'd like to support them with a tax deductible donation, you can do so at the South Florida Special Needs Color Guard Web site.

Update: October 31, 2011

It is with deep regret that I post that Amy passed away on April 7, 2011 of pneumonia. Her death was completely unexpected and quite a shock to us all.

A Serious Note About Thanksgiving

Although I love Thanksgiving clip art and the holiday itself, it's important to remember that there has been quite a bit of revisionist history surrounding the original event. Many people are now becoming sensitive, and rightfully so, to the fact that the Pilgrims annihilated native people.

While we can't erase the terrible deeds that happened long ago, we can keep a loving spirit toward those who were pushed out in the name of progress. Even more to the point, we can be tolerant of all races and traditions now, because we can do something about that. So this is just a gentle reminder that on Thanksgiving -- as well as every other day -- we should practice tolerance. That way, our ancestors won't have to make apologies for us the way we have to for ours.

Very well done hub Word Play. It is so much more than a hub on clip art. I love the fall and Thanksgiving too. I love watching the Macy's Day Parade and will be watching out for the South Florida Special Needs Color Guard this year. How cool is that for you to watch your neice Amy. I really appreciate your one last gentle reminder for us all to practice tolerance, not just on Thanksgiving but on every day. Thank you.

Thanks for your kind words, Sheryl and Dottie. And thanks, too, Dottie for picking up on the other aspects of this hub. It seemed like a good opportunity to get up on my soapbox for just a brief moment. ;-)

Hi, Diane. Because of your experience, I'm sure you know first-hand how moving it can be to watch these performances. It's so great that there are opportunities for achievement for people who are so capable, just not in what many consider to be traditional ways.
